Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence (AI) company, xAI, on Saturday, announced a new AI chatbot called ‘Grok,’ which is designed to compete with the likes of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Bard, and Microsoft’s Bing.

The new AI chatbot, which is currently in beta, will be available for limited users in the United States to test out before the company makes a broader release.
“Grok is an AI modeled after the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, so intended to answer almost anything and, far harder, even suggest what questions to ask!” says the xAI start-up while describing the new AI tool in its announcement.
“Grok is designed to answer questions with a bit of wit and has a rebellious streak, so please don’t use it if you hate humor!
“At xAI, we want to create AI tools that assist humanity in its quest for understanding and knowledge.”
The Grok AI tool is powered by xAI’s Grok-1 large language model (LLM), which the company has developed over the last four months. Grok-1 has gone through many iterations over this span of time, says the start-up.
After announcing xAI, the team trained a prototype LLM (Grok-0) with 33 billion parameters, which xAI’s website claims approaches Meta’s LLaMA 2 (70B) capabilities on standard LM benchmarks, despite using only half of its training resources.
As far as performance is concerned, it is currently achieving 63.2% on the HumanEval coding task and 73% on the Massive Multitask Language Understanding (MMLU) dataset.
Further, the new AI chatbot will have real-time knowledge of the world via the 𝕏 platform and will also answer spicy questions not answered by most other AI systems.

Musk says Grok AI will be available as an inbuilt feature on X and a standalone app once it’s out of beta stage. It will also be integrated into X Premium+ subscriptions, which cost $16 per month, on the microblogging platform.
Currently, there is yet to be a word when Grok will be made available to all users and if it is meant for both Android and iOS platforms. Interested users can join the Grok waitlist here to try out the prototype before it enters a broader release phase.
xAI concluded by saying that this is “just the first step for xAI” and “we have an exciting roadmap and will be rolling out new capabilities and features in the coming months.”
