Earlier in May, Sony PlayStation announced its dedicated PlayStation (PS5) remote play device called “Project Q, “enabling users to stream any game from their PS5 console using remote play over Wi-Fi.
On Wednesday, Sony officially revealed its PS5 portable gaming device known as “PlayStation Portal” (known earlier as Project Q) that will launch later this year for $199.99.
Sony’s Portable PlayStation Portal To Launch For $199.99
The PlayStation Portal, defined as a “remote player,” will feature a vibrant 8-inch LCD screen with up to 1080p resolution at 60fps (frames per second). It also includes a 3.5mm audio jack for wired audio.
Further, the PlayStation Portal features prominent controllers on each side of the screen, similar to Sony’s PS5 DualSense controllers, which support adaptive triggers and haptic feedback technology.
“PlayStation Portal is the perfect device for gamers in households where they might need to share their living room TV or simply want to play PS5 games in another room of the house,” Hideaki Nishino, Senior Vice President of platform experience at Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) wrote in a blog post.
“PlayStation Portal will connect remotely to your PS5 over Wi-Fi, so you’ll be able to swiftly jump from playing on your PS5 to your PlayStation Portal. PlayStation Portal can play supported games that are installed on your PS5 console and use the Dualsense controller.”
Since it’s a Remote Play-only system, the device won’t be able to support PSVR2 games and cloud-enabled games available through PlayStation Plus Premium. Also, the system requires broadband internet Wi-Fi with at least 5Mbps. Sony recommends having a high-speed connection of at least 15Mbps for a better play experience.
PlayStation Portal remote player will launch later this year for $199.99 / €219.99 / £199.99. More details are expected to be shared when pre-orders begin for PlayStation Portal.
Besides the portable gaming device, Sony also unveiled two new wireless audio devices that can connect to PS5 consoles and the PlayStation Portal via PlayStation Link, Sony’s proprietary wireless audio technology. They are:
- The Pulse Elite is a new wireless headset that offers lossless audio and comes with a retractable boom mic and AI-enhanced noise rejection. It will be priced at $149.99 / €149.99 / £129.99.
- The Pulse Explore is Sony’s first set of wireless earbuds that offers a premium portable audio experience with dual microphones and AI-enhanced noise rejection. It will be priced at $199.99 / €219.99 / £199.99.
Like the PlayStation Portal, more details about these audio devices will be shared soon, including when pre-orders begin and launch dates.
