Apple has acknowledged the overheating issue on its latest flagship handsets, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, and plans to release an iOS 17 software update very soon to fix the problem.
Apple To Release Update For iPhone 15 Pro Overheating Issue
It all started last week when reports began emerging about some users experiencing overheating issues on iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models even with normal usage, and the devices getting hotter than expected, along with processor slowdowns.
While some speculated the new A17 Pro Bionic chipset to be the reason behind the issue, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo pointed to the compromises made in the thermal system design to achieve a lightweight design for the iPhone 15 Pro models.
Contrary to the speculations, Apple said that the problem is due to an iOS 17 bug and recent updates to some third-party apps, including Instagram, Uber, and the racing game Asphalt 9: Legends, that is overloading the A17 Pro chip, causing overheating issue on iPhone 15 Pro handsets.
According to the Cupertino tech giant, iPhone 15 Pro models may feel warmer during the first few days after setting up or restoring the device, owing to the increased background activity.
Apple has also ruled out any possibility of a hardware problem and said the iPhone 15 Pro’s titanium frame and aluminum substructure have nothing to do with overheating. Instead, they allow for better heat dissipation than previous stainless steel iPhones.
“We have identified a few conditions which can cause iPhone to run warmer than expected. The device may feel warmer during the first few days after setting up or restoring the device because of increased background activity,” Apple said in a statement to Forbes reporter David Phelan.
“We have also found a bug in iOS 17 that is impacting some users and will be addressed in a software update. Another issue involves some recent updates to third-party apps that are causing them to overload the system. We’re working with these app developers on fixes that are in the process of rolling out.”
As per the Forbes report, Instagram has already rolled out a fix this Wednesday as part of an update to the app to address the overheating issue. Apple is also working with other app developers to resolve the problem.
The report adds that the company also emphasizes that the overheating issue is not a safety issue and will not affect the long-term performance of impacted iPhones.
Apple will likely fix the issue with iOS 17, which is currently in beta and scheduled to be released in October. Alternatively, the tech giant may release a smaller software update, such as iOS 17.0.3, to address the bugs causing overheating issues.
Neither Apple has provided an exact release date for the fix nor did it mention how many customers are affected by the issue. It only said that the bug problem should be resolved soon.
