X (Formerly Twitter) To Get Audio And Video Calling Feature: Elon Musk

Announcing in an X post, Musk said that the audio and video calling feature will allow users to connect with other X users from their Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows devices without the need to share their phone numbers. Musk adds that these new features would make X the “effective global address book.”

“Video & audio calls coming to X: – Works on iOS, Android, Mac & PC – No phone number needed – X is the effective global address book. That set of factors is unique,” Musk posted.

Previously, in July, Andrea Conway, a design engineer at X, hinted at the feature by sharing a demo mock-up of the redesigned DM menu on the platform, which included the video calling option.

Both the audio and video calling features will likely be accessible within Twitter’s Direct Message (DM) menu. The video calling option is located in the upper right corner of the menu so that users can easily switch between text messages, photos, videos, and calls. The design of the new DM menu will be similar to that of Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp.

With other social media platforms, such as Facebook and Instagram, already offering audio and video calling features, adding these new features is a significant step for X to help attract new users and increase the engagement rate on the microblogging platform.

The latest expansion of services is part of Musk’s vision of transitioning “Twitter” into an “everything app” for social networking, video sharing, and professional engagement.

Musk has yet to specify how the features would work and if the calls would have end-to-end encryption. Also, he has yet to reveal any specific timeline for the launch of the features. So, stay tuned for more information!
